What are the most common reasons a domain transfer fails?
The most frequent causes for a domain transfer not completing:
- wrong or expired transfer code — request a new one from the current registrar (or from the RoTLD portal, for
.rodomains); - an active transfer lock — most registrars enable a protection against unauthorized transfers by default; it must be disabled at the current registrar before starting the transfer;
- the domain was recently registered or transferred — many registries enforce a minimum period (usually 60 days) since registration or the last transfer before allowing a new one;
- mismatched holder details — if the details entered when starting the transfer don't match WHOIS, the transfer can be rejected;
- unpaid transfer invoice — for extensions where a transfer involves a fee, the order stays pending until it's paid;
- no confirmation from the holder — if the transfer confirmation email isn't approved within the deadline set by the registry, the transfer expires automatically.
